Almost every melodic rock fan will have a record or CD where Mark Spiro participates as a songwriter or backup vocalist. There are many classic examples: Mr Big, Heart, Giant, Bad English and Winger being a handful of artists struck by the pen of Spiro. We are talking about artists who have collectively sold more than a hundred million records!
Mark was born and raised in Seattle, where at an early age he began to write and play music. Having musical aspirations early on in life and a desire to achieve his goals, he ended up in Germany where for several years he worked with Jack White and other producers on many German pop/disco productions. While in Germany Mark recorded and released his first solo album “In Stereo”. In the mid eighties Mark relocated to Los Angeles where he soon garnered a reputation as a songwriter, and someone in demand for the major labels projects requiring an outside writer or collaborator for their artists. As an artist himself, he talked with session great Dann Huff about forming a band, but due to various reasons Mark never became a member of what would eventually become the band Giant. However, Mark is credited as a songwriter for eight songs on Giant´s very successful debut album “Last Of The Runaways”. Marks second solo album “Care Of My Soul” was released in Japan, Australia and Scandinavia during 1994. It was a very artistic and sophisticated acoustic based pop album, highlighting Mark´s special trademark in the vocals and writing department. 1996 saw the release of ”Now Is Then, Then Is Now” on Westcoast Records – a near perfect example of melodic rock which received unanimous acclaim in the European rock press for being one of the best releases that year. It ended up winning the UK magazines Frontiers award for best singer/songwriter album. October 1997 saw the release of Mark´s next album “Devotion”. Slightly heavier in approach when compared to “Now Is Then..” it still features those trademark melodies and harmonies synonymous with Spiro. It was also his first album recorded and released for MTM Music. ”The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of” followed two years later. This album featured collaborations with long time guitar partners Tim Pierce, Michael Thompson and Dann Huff.
