Le Noise is a collaboration between Neil Young and musician, songwriter and producer Daniel Lanois, best known for his work with U2, Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, The Neville Brothers and many others.
Recorded at Lanois’ home studio in Silverlake, Los Angeles, Le Noise features Young playing acoustic and electric guitars with the addition of Lanois signature sonic textures, creating one of the most sonically exciting albums Young has ever recorded. No band, no additional recordings, just “the man on the bench and me doing a good job during the recording process”, as Lanois puts it.
Commenting on the new ‘Le Noise’ album after listening to it at Lanois’ house, the Los Angeles Times wrote: “What’s amazing about ‘Le Noise’ is how it both sums up and shows Young’s idiosyncratic attitude to music, predominantly just Neil and guitar – his big white Gretsch full-body electric guitar, fast-paced and vibrant on most of the tracks, winding around a handful of strumming acoustic instruments. It’s all recorded and amplified – literally and figuratively – by Lanois’s key sonic scale, which wraps around the vocals and amplifies the bass notes through sound distortion tools, synthesizers and other electronic instruments.
The video, directed by cinematographer Adam Vollick, consists of 8 black-and-white recordings of live performances of the album’s tracks.
