A chance meeting between Glenn Hughes and Robin George eventually led to Glenn being invited to sing backing vocals for Robin and Sean Harris’ album Notorious, which led to a full collaboration between Robin and Glenn. The album began as a solo album by Robin George and evolved into Overcome, complete with four songs co-written by the two: “Number One”, “Sweet Revenge”, “Don’t Come Crying” and the title track.
Such was the confidence and strength in the new recordings that a deal was signed with a major label, but it fell through and these recordings disappeared into the archives. Glenn is in top form on the album, and among the 13 tracks of melodic and occasionally funky hard rock, a particular treat is the song “Haunted”, essentially recorded by a reformed Trapeze, featuring Dave Holland, Mel Galley and Terry Rowley.
Glenn Hughes has rightly been hailed as “The Voice Of Rock,” and for good reason. With a career that began in 1970 with Mel Galley and Dave Holland in Trapeze, followed by Deep Purple between 1973 and 1976, Glenn would also form Hughes/Thrall, join Black Sabbath, enjoy a successful solo career, with artists as diverse as Gary Moore , Joe Lynn Turner and KLF working together, forming Black Country Communion and California Breed and leading The Dead Daisies.
Over the years, Robin George has worked with many music legends including Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin, Philip Lynott of Thin Lizzy, David Byron of Uriah Heep, Pete Way of UFO, John Wetton & Asia, Daniel Boone, Raymond Froggatt and Spike of the Quireboys. As a Wolverhampton local, it’s no surprise that a musician of Robin George’s caliber has come across local heroes like Trapeze.
