Under Japanese law, non-Japanese artist’s works are only copyrighted for about 20 years. Thus, these cheap pirate labels could legally (under Japanese law) combine song collections of non-Japanese artists and sell them without the authorization of the record company (Toshiba/EMI in the case of the Beatles) by simply paying the JASRAC royalties.
