You might know Daniele Liverani best in his role as a keyboard player in many metal acts including Khymera, Genius the Rock Opera, Twin Spirits or Cosmics. But did you know he was an accomplished guitar player. I’m suspecting you did. He’s been playing guitar from an early age. With his new solo album, Eleven Mysteries, Liverani picks up his axe once again. As you would suspect, Eleven Mysteries contains 11 songs where Liverani demonstrates his exceptional skills. Also, as you would likely surmise, he follows in the neo-classical guitar tradition. Expect some sizzling shredding throughout this disc, and you’ll find it bunches. But it’s not always that way, ripping up the fret board that is. A songs such as Supreme Gladness and All Is Pure find Liverani offering some smooth, often soothing licks, over pyrotechnics.
More importantly, the songs stand on the strength of good song composition. You would expect no less from Liverani simply because most everything he has created in those other projects moves upon a sense of melody and the integration of all musical instruments. This is notable on Giving, the only song not penned by Liverani, but created by another talented keyboardist, Marco Zago.
As far as pure metal shred albums, Eleven Mysteries is not as self-indulgent or extravagant as one would suspect or one would get from another guitar virtuoso. This is likely due to those aforementioned elements in that last paragraph. Ultimately, whatever instrument Daniele Liverani picks up, he’s still a song craftsman. That’s what you get here superb guitar playing within very well-crafted songs. Recommended.
