KREYSKULL – YEAR OF THE OCTOPUS 2012

NOW!!!

Quite funny that such a fervent hater of He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe as me gets to review Kreyskull, because the first thing that came to mind upon seeing the band name was… yes sirree ‘By the powers of Gereyskull’ aaarrggghhhh. With something such as that as code of reference I was expecting moronic He-Man like over the top Manowar Masturbatory Metal which has less power than Celine Dion who sinks the Titanic.

But lo and behold. It is thoroughly good heavy metal which references luminaries such as Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus, Candlemass, Judas Priest and doesn’t reference the Manowar leather boys. Doomy heavy metal, which sometimes remains on the side of old heavy metal and at other times goes the way of classic doom. All songs possess a head and a tail and are characterized by a riff-oriented build-up. After just one listen the songs have nestled themselves in your head. The four Finns from Kreyskull clearly know what they are doing and somehow it also sounds reasonably Finnish.
Lovers of good old-fashioned heavy metal should give ‘Year Of The Octopus’ a listen.
