America ‘The Capitol Years’ is a six-CD box set released through Caroline International that features the bands band’s entire Capitol Record output (1979 – 1985) together for the first time. Housed in a clamshell box, it features the newly re-mastered albums (by Andy Pearce) as well as an enhanced booklet with comments from the band on the making and impact of the albums.
The set contains ‘Silent Letter’ (1979), ‘Alibi’ (1980), ‘View from The Ground’ (1982), ‘Your Move’ (1983), ‘Perspective’ (1984) and ‘In Concert’ (1985).

“REO SPEEDWAGON – The Classic Years 1978-1990 [HNE BOX 9-CD Remastered]” is a must for all US Melodic Rock / AOR fans. I really dig the remastering job, not saturated / not brickwalled, Kevin Cronin’s voice is nicely separated flying high over, and all instruments come clear, pristine.

Von Groove were another terrific melodic rock band that released their debut album at just the wrong time. By 1992, this kind of music was on the outs, and these guys would in no way achieve any success here in the States.
Like a typical melodic rock record of the early 1990’s, this album is loaded with big choruses, huge harmonies and awesome production. I would never claim Canada to be a hotspot for melodic rock back in the day, but they had some really solid bands that never got any attention. It’s really a shame this record isn’t more well-known among hard rock fans, these guys made a really decent debut album. Favorite songs are “Once Is Not Enough,” “Better Than Ever,” “C’mon C’mon” and “Can’t Get Too Much.”

This album is one of the forgotten treasures of the 1980’s, produced by Don Was. The album was only released on vinyl and has never been reissued.
Though primarily a Funk & Soul album, the individual tracks are very varied and the whole album is a very good example of what David Lasley is capable of. Especially the track “Euripides Meets The Shangri-Las (Something About Boots + Birds)” is very unusual for a music album, as it is in fact a spoken poem with a choir of spoken voices. The rhythm of the performance is incredible and even more impressive is the fact that the track was recorded on board a train going from Los Angeles to New York.
