The British prog-rock band East of Eden was perhaps one of the first bands to use violins and saxophones in their arsenal. The recipe EoE used to make music was this: a dose of rock, a dose of jazz a la Coltrane, a dose of classical a la Bartok, and everything is seasoned with oriental twists.
