Sunless Sky – Firebreather 2014

Front

[EXCLUSIVE]

Now here is a treat to behold! Suddenly out of the depths of Power Metal arrives SUNLESS SKY, with epic music that will leave you wishing you were part of some medieval war fighting mythical beasts such as Dragons or Minotaurs. For a first full length record, SUNLESS SKY have really raised the bar for other bands of a similar genre, demonstrating their talent on their instruments and their ability to write powerful music.

The first thing you will probably notice about this record is the powerful voice that Juan Ricardo has. It sounds incredibly similar to the voice of probably the most famous metal vocalist, Bruce Dickinson/ In fact, I could have easily mistaken him for Bruce right away, he sounds so clean and energetic; this is clearly one of the many highlights of this album. Right from the opening track “Subzero”, we are thrown into an epic void of harmonized lead guitars and galloping triplets which shows how this band were clearly influenced by the greats such as IRON MAIDEN.  This style continues throughout the other thirteen tacks on the album, each one being thoroughly enjoyable to listen to. Dave Kirk (lead guitarist) has done a fantastic job on constructing some amazing solos. Whilst some may not be the most technical solos compared to other Power Metal bands such as DRAGONFORCE, but the solo in songs such as “Grind you Down” left me amazed with how well it sounded against the backing guitars. There are also songs that are noticeably heavier than the rest; “Air Raid” is certainly one of them. There is a mix of heaviness throughout the album to compliment a wide range of music tastes, there is bound to be at least one song you will listen to over and over. To conclude, this album was simply brilliant. For a new upcoming Power Metal band, I would already put it up there with the likes of DRAGONFORCE, their writing skill is impeccable, and their musical talent is nearing a very high level.
