VIRGIN STEELE brought their grandiose blend of epic heavy metal, mythology and old-school steel to Hell’s Heroes VIII in Houston, delivering a compact but powerful festival set built around some of the band’s most dramatic material. David DeFeis still commands the stage like a high priest of metal theatre, while the songs hit with that unmistakable mix of triumph, darkness and ancient-war atmosphere.
Recorded at White Oak Music Hall on March 21, 2026, the performance runs through several eras of the band’s catalogue without wasting much time between blows.
“A Token of My Hatred” opens with immediate force before “In the Light” brings in more melody and atmosphere. “Invictus” remains one of those VIRGIN STEELE songs that seems almost designed for a festival field — heroic, martial and big enough to feel like a battle standard being raised over the crowd.
“The Wine of Violence” and “In the Arms of the Death God” darken the mood, while “Through Blood and Fire” pushes the set back into full epic-metal territory.
“By the Hammer of Zeus (And the Wrecking Ball of Thor)” is pure VIRGIN STEELE mythology: oversized title, oversized riffing and absolutely no interest in subtlety. That is precisely why it works.
The band then take an unexpected turn with “Jesus Just Left Chicago”, before “The Burning of Rome (Cry for Pompeii)” delivers one of the biggest emotional peaks of the set.
A shortened “Thy Kingdom Come” closes the performance like the last chapter of an ancient war chronicle — brief, dramatic and leaving the audience wanting another half hour.
There is something stubbornly admirable about VIRGIN STEELE in 2026. They have never chased fashion, never tried to sand down their theatrical side and never apologized for making heavy metal sound like kings, gods and collapsing empires are somehow involved.
