Few New Wave Of British Heavy Metal bands wrote songs inspired by Shakespeare, but The Bard could well have been describing the NWOBHM when he said “though this be madness, yet there is method in it.” Mark Kirkman – dubbed by some ‘the fastest guitarist in Southend’ – tells the story of Random Black, “a hard-working NWOBHM band that just didn’t make it big.”

Lord Fist – Wilderness of Hearts 2020

Within the framework of NWoBHM-inspired steel, Lord Fist’s uplifting, forward-pushing style may lend itself to that of their countrymen Nightstryke, Legionnaire or Angel Sword – yet excels in that the frontman his six-string counterpart Niko display an astounding inventiveness when crafting melodies and structuring songs that, strangely enough, don’t swerve one iota from the traditional path.

Faithful Breath – Gold ‘n’ Glory [ High Roller Records] 2020

Faithful Breath were originally founded in Bochum in 1967. The first album “Fading Beauty”, a mixture of Krautrock, Prog and Psychedelic, followed in 1974 and is now a sought-after collector’s item. Six long years later followed “Back On My Hill”. “Rock Lions” (1981) and “Hard Breath” (1983) finally paved the way for “Gold ‘N’ Glory”, which saw the light of day in 1984 on the Belgian label Mausoleum. Many consider “Gold ‘N’ Glory” the best album Faithful Breath ever recorded.

Billion Dollar Babies Battle Axe – The Complete Edition (Cherry Red Remastered) 2020, 3CD

The “solo” Alice record “Welcome to My Nightmare” had firmly separated Alice Cooper the singer from Alice Cooper the band. Rather than abandon the intended album, drummer Neal Smith, guitarist Michael Bruce and bassist Dennis Dunaway joined forces with lead guitarist Mike Marconi and Alice Cooper keyboard player Bob Dolin, and signing to Polydor records, fashioned the abandoned Alice Cooper band album into “Battle Axe”, calling themselves Billion Dollar Babies, a very deliberate nod to their previous incarnation.
